Geoscience Education

My primary research interest is in field-based geoscience education. Specifically my interests include:

1.) Determining the effectiveness of field-based, interdisciplinary geology classes at improving scientific literacy. Currently this includes assessing if GeoJourney improves student misconceptions in geosciences and improving content gains. Analytical approaches include using mixed methods (summative assessments using the Geoscience Concept Inventory, student interviews, and written evaluations).

2.) Development of instructional media used on field excursions. This has included the development of a portable audio/video system and the use of iPods to prepare students for upcomming field stops. Click here to see student respones to the use of our prototype of the portbale audio/video system and here to see how we use iPods on GeoJourney.
